JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE:                         Outreach School Social Worker            

DEPARTMENT:            Youth and Family Services

REPORTS TO:             Director of Youth and Family Services

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under broad supervision of the Director of Youth and Family Services, incumbent provides social work services and assistance to improve the social and psychological functioning of children and their families and maximize family well-being and academic functioning of children. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:  

  • Provides group counseling and psychoeducational group treatment for children on topics such as social skills, substance abuse, divorce, loss and grief, and other areas of concern.
  • Provides consultation to school personnel regarding problems such as student misbehavior and truancy; assists with identification of causes and solutions; provides support for the implementation and evaluation of solutions. 
  • Serves as a member of support teams to develop, implement and evaluate service plans; provides crisis intervention counseling.
  • Counsels students whose behavior, school progress, or mental or physical impairment indicate a need for assistance; diagnoses student’s problems and refers students and families for needed services, such as medical, mental health, housing, debt counseling, financial or legal assistance.
  • Provides consultation to and training for parents on issues impacting child and family well-being, such as parenting, substance abuse, bullying, social media, social adjustment, and other areas of concern.
  • Maintains knowledge base and improves skills through current research literature, participation in professional associations, professional development workshops and training.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Supports community efforts/serves on community teams to address psychosocial concerns impacting children and families, e.g., substance abuse prevention.
  • May coordinate outreach programs and provide consultation to various community agencies.
  • Performs other duties as required.

DEPENDABILITY: 

  • Regularly attends and is punctual for work
  • May occasionally work evenings  

QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE:

  • Knowledge of counseling principles, practices and ethics
  • Knowledge of legal requirements and limits of confidentiality
  • Knowledge of human development, family systems theories and multicultural issues
  • Knowledge of group dynamics and ability to develop and facilitate support groups
  • Knowledge of issues impacting the well-being of children and families, such as addiction, abuse, poverty, illness, divorce, grief and loss, and trauma
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of crisis prevention and intervention
  • Skills in crisis intervention with children and ability to provide outreach in unstructured settings, such as school hallways and cafeteria
  • Strong verbal skills, including the ability to explain concepts to children, families and groups
  • Ability to establish relationships and engage collaboratively with children, families, colleagues, school personnel and services providers
  • Ability to write case notes

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work.  However, there may be some walking, standing, stooping, reaching, carrying items such as papers, books or files
  • Must be able to push/pull/lift objects of less than twenty (20) pounds and sit for prolonged periods.  Able to perform manipulative skills, which require hand-eye coordination such as keyboard skills
  • Must be able to see objects closely as in reading case histories
  • Must be able to hear normal sounds with background noise, distinguish voice patterns and communicate with speech as in using a telephone and making presentations
  • Must be able to attend to detail and concentrate for sixty (60) minutes or more with some interruptions, remember multiple assignments given over long periods of time and understand the theories behind several related concepts. 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree from a recognized college or university in social work, counseling, or a related field, including training and supervised experience in clinical or school practice
  • Two (2) years of experience providing individual, child, and group therapy in a clinic or school setting
  • Experience presenting to small and large groups of parents and school staff
  • Bilingual/Bicultural, Spanish/English skills helpful, but not required

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION:

  • State of Connecticut, Department of Public Health LCSW, LMFT, LPC; or, Psy.D. (if not licensed)
  • Valid driver’s license
